Leave all the saving to the men? I don’t think so!

Hey y’all! Happy Halloweennnnnn!

Lots of times when we tell people who we are and they’re like, "oh! Usually y’all’s church sends out boys!" And every time someone says that I think of that line in The Incredibles: "Leave all the saving to the men? I don’t think so!" #sistersinzion

There is a recent convert in the ward, JC, who got baptized in April and is on my list of top 5 favorite people in Alabama. He is from Georgia, and his mom has really been struggling with her health the last little while and passed away 2 weeks ago. We hadn’t been able to see him for the longest time because he had been in Georgia. We were able to see him last week and I am always amazed at how much of a rock he is! His mother gave him her family bible. (Family bibles are a BIG deal in the south. When a couple gets married, they’re given a really nice bible and they write their whole genealogy in it and it becomes their family bible! People show us theirs a lot and they are gorgeous.) We had planned to share Isaiah 54:7,8, & 10 with him. He turned to that page in his mom’s bible and those verses were marked and lots of notes were written next to them! JC was really comforted by that! It is amazing that the Lord is so aware of us and gives us those tiny miracles. Even though it didn’t seem like much it meant the world to JC!

On Tuesday evening we were tracting in Sheffield and I decided to try a new approach and it didn’t turn out like I expected haha. This lady answers the first door we knock on and I say, "We’re looking for a man named Dieter who lives on this street? He has white hair, he’s German, a retired pilot who really loves planes, do you know him?" And then she takes us on a wild goose chase around the whole neighborhood asking if people know Dieter. But she did give us her number so maybe it wasn’t all in vain ๐Ÿ™‚

Wednesday night was the ward chili cook off and we got to judge! So basically I was in a food coma afterwards. Super fun night! I adore Russellville ward.

Thursday we had interviews with President Sainsbury! Gosh I just love him. It went super well and we were able to talk to Sister Sainsbury too! Love themmmmmm!

Saturday we went to lunch with a less active member and ate toooons of fried food. Typical southern meal of fried catfish and hushpuppies- so so good! He asked us what we eat in Utah and we said "pretty much everything you eat here except we don’t deep fry everything." He was stunned and asked, "well how do you cook things if you don’t fry them?!" It was hilarious because he was 100% serious. I love the blessed south.

Oh and we tracted into George Jones’ guitarist this week! He told us all kinds of stories and played us a few songs including "He Stopped Loving Her Today" which is a country classic! I was in absolute heaven! Really really cool guy. He wasn’t interested in the gospel though haha.

Love y’all! Be safe tonight!

All my love,
Sister Oscarson

โ€‹Hey y’all!

Hope you’ve had a great week! We sure did!

There is a recent convert in the ward, Lucille, who I absolutely adore! Her husband was being taught by the elders back during my first transfer here and was progressing really well. He ended up going to drug rehab in Tuscaloosa in July and came home on Monday! We went and visited Lucille Tuesday and saw him and I can’t even explain to you how much better he looks! He has life in his eyes, he’s happier and more confident! We went back on Friday and taught him and it was amazing! He was so excited to start coming back to church (he came every week with Lucille ever since she got baptized!) and keep studying with the missionaries! Gosh I love them both so much!

Every night before Sister Mathis and I go to sleep we go through all the miracles that happened that day. Even when it seems like there aren’t any I promise there always are! Our God is a God of miracles!

I read Alma 40 and 41 on the plan of salvation during personal study this morning. What a blessing to have this knowledge! We know where we came from, why we’re here, and where we’re going. Lots of people tell us those are things they’ve never even thought about. Chapter 40 verse 5 really stuck out to me:

"For God knoweth all these things; and it sufficeth me to know that this is the case."

There are several little details of the plan of salvation that we don’t know. But God knows and that’s all that matters. I find lots of comfort in that.

May everyone feel the love of the Savior this week! Roll tide!

All my love,
Sister Oscarson

I love my life

Seriously, how did my life get so cool? I get to live in beautiful Alabama and meet the most amazing people and preach of Christ’s restored gospel every single day. Wow, I can’t help but feel super blessed.

We got transfer calls this weekend and Sister Mathis and I are staying together in Russellville! I’m super excited that I get to train her for the full 12 weeks and that I get to stay in this ward. My dearest friends are here! This means I’ll be staying in Russellville for a total of 6 months! Kinda crazy, but I’m really looking forward to this upcoming transfer!

On Saturday we were able to go out to Cherokee and help a less active family clean and fix up a house their mom is moving into. We didn’t know what we were getting into, to say the very least. The house is well over 100 years old and hasn’t been lived in for decades. We were able to find lots of cool stuff and had lots of fun! In the words of Elder Diede, "When we got there, it really needed to be bulldozed. But after we left it only mostly needed to be bulldozed." Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Friday we went to Gardendale (suburb of Birmingham) for a meeting with all the trainers and trainees. IT WAS THE BEST! We had some really really great trainings from President and Sister Sainsbury. The talked about how the 3 greatest gifts God has given us are:

1. Life

2. Agency

3. The atonement of Christ

They talked about those things and it was very powerful and then we all went out to the beautiful Birmingham temple grounds and wrote our missionary constitutions. One of the most powerful experiences I’ve had in a little while!

There is a less active couple, the Evans, who we’re been working with the whole time I’ve been here. They have been making so much progress lately and I absolutely adore them! When we first started meeting with them Brother Evans wouldn’t talk to us or come out of the back room. But now he is so excited when we come over, willingly says prayers and reads scriptures, told us he prays for our protection twice a day, and yesterday he smoked ribs for us! They’ve been coming to church and are even bringing their grandkids! Yesterday we shared The Family A Proclamation to the World with them and Sister Evans loved it so much she said she’s going to hang it on the outside of their front door so the whole world can see it. I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

Everyone read your scriptures and say your prayers this week! Hope it’s a blessed one!

All my love,

Sister Oscarson

October is heaven in Alabama

…it truly is! Summer is finally ending and the beginning of fall is upon us. If you can make it through a southern summer you can do anything.

The coolest thing that happened this week was our multi-zone conference with Elder Dyches of the Seventy! The APs called us the day before and told us he was going to interview me… umm ok. He wanted to interview like 8 missionaries from the whole mission and don’t ask me why I got picked. But it really was the COOLEST opportunity! We talked for a while and he gave me some really good advice and nuggets of wisdom. He is such an amazing man! I have no doubt he was called of God to do what he does!

During the training he shared some verses that I now really love:

Moses 6:31- And when Enoch had heard these words, he bowed himself to the earth, before the Lord, and spake before the Lord, saying: Why is it that I have found favor in thy sight, and am but a lad, and all the people hate me; for I am slow of speech; wherefore am I thy servant?

32- And the Lord said unto Enoch: Go forth and do as I have commanded thee, and no man shall pierce thee. Open thy mouth, and it shall be filled, and I will give thee utterance, for all flesh is in my hands, and I will do as seemeth me good.

And then he said, "if everyone hates you, you’re in good company!" Hahaha for reals so true though. Many a prophet and righteous man has been hated before you.

The rest of our week was good, Monday-Wednesday were pretty hard but the weekend was 1000x better. So grateful for a God that turns bad days into good ones! It’s always possible!

May God bless each of y’all! ROLLLLL TIDE!

All my love,
Sister Oscarson

And they straightway left their nets

Hey y’all! I’m just going to go along with every other missionary in the world’s email today and say WASN’T CONFERENCE THE BEST?! Everyone says it 1000x better as a missionary and it’s true! What a blessing it is to have God’s true prophet speak to us. I put an emphasis on God’s true prophet because lots of people in the south think that anyone can be a prophet if they decide they want to be or go to school long enough. The key is in the authority!

We watched conference in the Russellville church building with the Russellville elders and the Red Bay sisters. It was incredibly powerful when the 6 of us in that empty church building stood and sang Called to Serve with the MTC choir during the Saturday afternoon session. BEING A MISSIONARY IS THE BEST. A couple members were so kind and had lunch with us between sessions.

This week I went on an exchange with Hermana Knaus in Tupelo, Mississippi! It’s such a beautiful place. We met some really awesome people!

I also had the new experience this week of teaching a lesson in a denture making shop. There is a man in the ward who has been less active for years who makes dentures for a living. It was really cool but a little bit of a shock to walk in there and see hundreds of teeth laying around! Haha he is such an awesome guy.

One principle from conference that I loved was that when we pray, we involve all 3 members of the Godhead. We pray to the Father in the name of Christ while the the Spirit is present. I really think that goes to show how important and holy prayer is!

This transfer I have been working on reading the New Testament. I am almost done with the book of John and it has been such a blessing and I have already gotten so much out of it! The life and teachings of Jesus Christ have so much power.

I have been thinking about these verses a lot lately:

Matthew 4:19 -"And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."

20- "And they straightway left their nets, and followed him."

The word straightway is what really impresses me. That takes a lot of faith to immediately drop something- something that you make your living with nontheless- and follow. What an example they set, and they were blessed beyond measure for it!

Go back and review and study your conference notes this week! Prayerfully ponder how to apply the things you learned and then do it! Don’t let the things you learned from conference just stay in this weekend.

Have a blessed week and ROLL TIDE!

All my love,

Sister Oscarson
