Alabama is beautiful!

Hey y’all!

This week went by so fast and so slow all at the same time.

Tuesday and Wednesday we went on exchanges with the Altadena hermanas, Sister Moline and Sister Magness! I was with Sister Moline and she is probably the funniest person alive. We had a goooood time! It was so much fun.
We were able to go on a little road trip to Talladega so she could teach one of their investigators in spanish. It was super funny because there were 3 english sisters and 1 spanish sister there so the 3 of us just awkwardly sat there while Sister Moline taught her by herself. She did a great job!

We went to visit a less active, Patty. Her son answers the door and we walk in and Patty is getting a tattoo at her kitchen table. Hahahaha so we did something I never thought I would do which is teach somebody a lesson while they’re getting a tattoo! Good times.

Wednesday was the worldwide missionary broadcast! Man, that was a spiritual feast! We’ve been adjusting to the changes in schedule and key indicators and it’s been going well!

This week we were able to spend time in the small towns in our area like cute Cropwell and Margaret, Alabama! It was so much fun! I’m in heaven there.

Friday night we "heart attacked" our investigators Q, James, and La’Miracle. We went back and had a lesson with them on Saturday and they had framed the hearts and hung them on their wall and my heart just melted!! Goodness I love them so much. My heart melted again when Q said the closing prayer and prayed for us by name. That’s a big deal. LOVE THEM!!!

Yesterday we went and visited and older lady in the ward named Sister Rice. She is the sweetest thing! While we were there the spirit was just like "you NEED to ask to play her piano." So I did and I played a couple hymns and the spirit was so, so strong. She started to cry and told us that was her late husband’s piano and that people used to play it all the time and nobody does anymore. Music has such power! It is such an amazing gift.

Have a blessed week!
All my love,
Sister Oscarson

Beautiful Logan Martin Lake in Cropwell, Alabama!

Miracles upon miracles!

Hey y’all!

We’ve had a great week! Missionary work is the best!

Wednesday we had zone training! It was lots of fun and we loved being able to meet the new missionaries! I love giving trainings with Sister Hall, she’s a natural! That night was suuuuuuper crazy with team ups and appointments so we were relieved to have made it through!

On Thursday we had a team up with an awesome member, Sister Smith, and we saw our investigators Q, James, and La’Miracle. Q and Sister Smith connected instantly and it was just the coolest thing to see!

Friday we had a team up with Sister Sainsbury! She is an absolute angel. We wanted to have some really solid appointments to take her to and we were trying all week to reach out to people to be able to meet with them. We literally talked to every person in our teaching pool and we were desperate. No one was available. We were like, "cool we’ll take the mission president’s wife tracting" hahahahaha. It was stressssss. By some miracle about an hour before she came we were able to get an appointment with a part member family. We got there with Sister Sainsbury and the 14 and 16 year old brother and sister were the only ones there and they started yellingand fighting with each other right in front of us. Sister Hall and I both were freaking out inside but Sister Sainsbury handled it with such grace. She’s such a good example and shared so much wisdom and love with us. So grateful for her!

Earlier in the day on Fridaywe got a text from a number we didn’t know, and it was a girl who introduced herself as Nicole. She said she has come to our church a few times in the past. She wanted to get back into going to church and said she feels the most at home at our church and was wondering if we could find her a ride! She was able to come on Sunday and she is just the sweetest girl!! She said she was so excited to come to church that she couldn’t sleep the night before. She loved church and is such a bright light!! We found her teaching record in the area book and she was taught a few years ago but it just wasn’t her time. It is so amazing to see how the Lord’s timing works!

We’ve been having some bad storms lately, but that’s nothing new haha! We have a weather radio in our apartment that goes off when there’s dangerous weather. Saturday night at 1:30 am it went off because of severe thunderstorms. Let me tell you, that thing will give you a heart attack in the middle of the night! Sister Hall and I have really great decision making skills at that hour of the night so we got up and relocated to the hallway….because obviously that’s the safest place to be. We woke up that morning on the floor of our apartment hallway and reevaluated every decision we’ve ever made. Needless to say we looked like a mess when we arrived at church that morning haha. There were more severe storms as church was ending too. Alabama weather y’all.

I found a quote the week that I really love!
"The invitation to trust the Lord does not relieve us from the responsibility to know for ourselves. This is more than an opportunity; it is an obligation- and it is one of the reasons we were sent to this earth. Latter Day Saints are not asked to blindly follow everything they hear. We are encouraged to think and discover truth for ourselves. We are expected to ponder, to search, to evaluate, and thereby come to a personal knowledge of the truth." -President Uchtdorf

Quote of the week:
Sis. Hall: "I feel like Noah."
Me: "Why?
Sis. Hall: "Because it’s raining and the people aren’t repenting."

Have a blessed week!
All my love,
Sister Oscarson

Some of the STLs at MLC last week! Don’t I serve with the cutestttttt sisters?!

“I wasn’t born in the south, but I came here as quick as I could!”

Hey y’all!!

Remember how last week we were in a state of emergency because of the winter storm? This week has been gorgeous and in the 70s, I don’t think I’ve worn a jacket all week! I’m not complaining one bit.

Bama lost the championship game in the last 9 seconds after an undefeated season. Let me tell you… the whole state (except the Auburn fans) has been in mourning all week. Tuesday morning we swear there was a palpable feeling of defeat in the air haha! The whole state revolves around football. Now they’re counting down the days until the next season starts!

This week our investigator Miss Ruth has been progressing leaps and bounds! She is the sweetest sweetest lady. She had never prayed in front of us but last week she said the closing prayer and there has been an incredible amount of change in her ever since! She is reading the Book of Mormon and praying about a baptism date! She said, "the Lord’s working with me! I can feel it!" We love Miss Ruth!

We were able to stop by and see Brittany very briefly, and she is almost done with 2 Nephi and we’ve only taught her twice! She has such pure intentions and a good heart.

Friday was MLC! I love MLC so much! It is so fun to see everyone and learn from President and Sister Sainsbury. This MLC was very focused on the Book of Mormon and helping investigators access the power in it. Man, it was powerful! On our way home from MLC we were able to stop by an investigator’s house and teach the Book of Mormon. It was so cool to be able to use all the things we had just learned. We are so excited to share them with our zone at zone training tomorrow! What an incredible gift the Book of Mormon is.

Saturday we were able to meet with the zone leaders and plan out the transfer for our zone! We are so so excited! We have some really amazing missionaries here. I feel so blessed to an STL in the best zone in the mission!

Sunday night was hilarious. We went to a dinner appointment with some members who live wayyyy out in the backwoods. (that’s something I super love about this area. Loooooots of backwoods. It’s my very favorite thing!) Brother Carlisle is one of the most southern men I have ever met in my life. He smoked ribs and let me tell you there’s nothing like it! He showed us his gun room and he has 127 guns all on display. It was a sight for sure. He always carries when he leaves the house and he showed us he has a special gun he carries to church in his scripture case, a church gun haha! I died because it was so Alabama. And then he said something that made me laugh even harder, "I go to the gun shop every Saturday, it’s just like goin’ to church!"

Be blessed y’all!
All my love,
Sister Oscarson

I love Sister Saatkamp!

Snow in Alabama?!

Hey y’all!

This week we experienced ice-maggedon. It was so crazy!! Alabama weather sure keeps you on your toes.

On Thursday we went and visited a member and her boyfriend who is a recent convert. We had the new experience of fried cinnamon rolls. Leave it to the south!

Friday the storm started. School got cancelled the night before and the governor declared a state of emergency. It only snows every couple of years in the deep south so they’re just not equipped for it. And the humidity makes it so there’s ice EVERYWHERE. That’s the dangerous part. We didn’t quite know what we were getting ourselves into haha! Contrary to popular belief, Alabama can get COLD! Humid cold is so so different that anything I’ve ever experienced. Friday was pretty normal and then in the evening it started to snow a little bit and there was freezing rain and ice started to cover everything. Even the Walmarts closed. That’s when you know it’s serious haha! President told us all to go in for the rest of the night. So we bundled up and made hot chocolate and watched the snow from our balcony! Sure was magical!

The next day was real cold and we decided it was a bad idea to drive our car for the next couple days because all the roads were covered in ice. We were able to see lots of people because everyone was home! It was a great, cold, adventurous day! Never let it be said that we aren’t tough!

Church got cancelled on Sunday and let me tell you it was the weirdest thing ever. We went over to Kimberly’s apartment (she’s a less active member who lives in our apartment complex and she’s our bff) and a had a devotional with her and watched the Restoration video and we bore our testimonies of the restoration. The spirit was so, so strong! After that we made lunch and she taught us how to fry fish! (I’m seeing a trend here haha) It was so good! I sure have learned how to fry lots of things here 🙂 Kimberly is the best!!!

Also on Saturday, my good friend Erskin got baptized in Russellville! I taught him the entire time I was in Russellville and he is the most amazing person! He is married to a recent convert, Lucille, who got baptized nearly a year ago in February. When I first met him in June he was not happy. He was addicted to drugs and going down a very dark path. He ended up going to drug rehab and came home in September and started making huge changes in his life. I will never, ever forget the first time I saw him after he came back from rehab. We were visiting with Lucille in their living room and he walked out of the bedroom and was absolutely GLOWING. The spirit struck me so hard in that moment. He was 100% different. He was not the same Erskin from before. He really took the steps to get going on the right path and realized that the restored gospel was what he wanted and needed. When we were teaching him after that I was amazed by his pure desire to change his life! He was happy and had the spirit with him. Completely, completely different from the Erskin I first met. It’s all because of Christ and His atonement. It is so incredible to see how this restored gospel can change lives. God is doing incredible things in the hearts of His children and He is kind enough to let us witness it! I learned so much from Erskin and I am so so happy for him and Lucille! They hold a very special place in my heart.

We got transfer calls and Sister Hall and I are staying in Leeds another transfer! I’ll be killing her! (this is her last transfer so I’m her last companion) This is going to be a powerful transfer!

"If God be for us, who can be against us?" -Romans 8:31

Sure do love y’all! Roll tide roll!

Yes folks… this is the extent of the snow that caused all the chaos.

God is good!

Hey y’all!

Wow! SO MUCH has happened since we emailed last! I’ll race to try to get it all in.

To start off the week before Christmas we went on exchanges with the Altadena sisters! They are literally the cutest things ever! I went to Altadena with cute cute Sister Cushing. They’re spanish sisters and serve in a spanish branch so they only talk to spanish speakers. Let me tell you… that was an experience. All I really could do was stand there and smile. Hahaha I felt so bad I couldn’t be of any help! It was such a fun experience to be an hermana for a day!

Then on Wednesday… we had gone to the mall in Leeds to do some contacting during all the crazy Christmas shopping people were doing. We were pulling out of the parking lot into traffic and a big Dodge Ram 1500 didn’t see us and rear ended us. Everyone was perfectly fine and it really could have been a lot worse. The guy driving the truck felt so bad, and he was so kind! We called the mission vehicle coordinator and got everything worked out and we’re in the process of getting our bumper fixed. Our car is a brand new 2017 Chevy Malibu, literally about a month old. It was a bit traumatizing but we’re pretty much recovered now!

The next day we had MLC with Brother Donaldson from Salt Lake! He is pretty high up in the missionary department and is largely involved in making The District videos. (He showed us a couple clips from The District 3!!!!) It was basically life changing, y’all. Honestly it was so amazing! I learned so so so so much. He discussed a lot of the challenges of being missionaries in the bible belt and it was the coolest thing!

Christmas and Christmas Eve were wonderful! We spent Christmas Eve with the bishop’s family and they are the sweetest, cutest people! We spent a lot of time caroling those 2 days and it filled my heart right up! It was 75 degrees on Christmas, can’t beat that! What a blessing it was to be a missionary at Christmastime. There is truly nothing like it!

On Monday we had a zone activity that we have been planning with the zone leaders for a while and it was a huge success! I am a firm believer that Birmingham zone is the best in the ABM!

While we were in Birmingham for the zone activity we figured we would go to the Chevy dealership and get an estimate on our car. We were both a little nervous because we had no idea what we were doing and car dealerships are scary. We pulled up and there was an employee walking by and we get out of the car and tell him what we’re there for and he says, "Don’t worry, I’m LDS, I’ll take care of you!" He sure did take care of us! He also introduced us to the general manager of the dealership and he’s a member of the church too!!! It was the biggest tender mercy! I am so grateful that members of this church take care of each other and it is such an amazing thing to be a part of! God is so aware of all of us!

On Tuesday we visited a Mormon.org referral named Brittany and left her with a Book of Mormon. We went back on Friday and SHE READ FOURTEEN CHAPTERS!!!!! She had it all highlighted and had taken notes all in it. She had the greatest questions and was so excited about it! I was nearly in tears of joy in that moment. I am amazed time and time again by the power of the Book of Mormon and how it changes lives! What an incredible gift!

And then later in the week we went on exchanges with the Gardendale sisters! I went with sweet Sister Wilkinson! This is her first transfer so it was so much fun to go on her first exchange with her. She has such amazing things ahead of her!

Big news everyone… MY TRAINER IS ENGAGED! I have been waiting for this day! They met on the mission and served in Russellville together. Takes me back to all the times my first transfer when I would say "I can’t wait for you to marry him!!" And then she would pretend to be mad and say "Sister! We can’t talk about that right now!" Or the time he sent her a package and put my name on it too just to be nice. Or my very first day in the mission when he hanging around us and I could not figure out who this random elder was. They are the cutest couple of my life and I am SO SO SO happy and excited for them!!!! #SteeleWedding2017

I found the best conference talk this morning! It’s by Elder Wirthlin in October 2006 called Sunday Will Come. Read it if you get the chance! Very powerful!

Sure do love y’all!
All my love,
Sister Oscarson

p.s. Bama’s going all the way to another national championship! Roll tide roll!!

Reunited! I sure love this girl!
